How soon can we walk on the carpet?

After the Install: When Can You Walk on Your New Carpet & What to Do Next

You’ve just had a beautiful new carpet installed by CTW. One of the first questions we often get is:

“How soon can we walk on the carpet?”

Here’s your go-to guide for what to expect after installation and how to care for your carpet in the days and weeks that follow to keep it looking brand new.

🕒 When Can I Walk on My New Carpet?

Right away, but WITH CARE.

Yes, you can walk on your new carpet as soon as installation is complete! Our team uses professional power stretchers and tack strips to secure everything tightly in place. That said, soft-soled shoes or socks are best for the first day or two to avoid pressing in dirt or shifting seams.

👉 If your carpet was installed with glue (common for staircases or commercial spaces), allow at least 24–48 hours before walking to give the adhesive time to cure completely.

🪑 When Can Furniture Go Back?

Wait 24–48 hours before placing heavy furniture back onto your carpet. This allows the carpet to settle into place, relax from any tension, and ensures that seams and padding aren’t compressed too early.

Furniture feet tip: Use protective pads or coasters under furniture legs to prevent permanent indentations and extend your carpet’s life.

🌬️ Ventilation is Key

Carpet (like many flooring or furniture products) may have a slight odor due to the padding, adhesives, or material itself. This is normal and temporary.

  • Open windows and run fans for at least 24–72 hours.
  • Consider setting up your home’s HVAC system to circulate air.
  • Avoid using your vacuum for the first day to let everything settle.

The off gassing is minimal, especially with today's low VOC carpets, and it typically disappears within a few days.

🧹 First Cleaning Dos & Don’ts

  • Wait at least 48 hours before vacuuming to avoid disturbing the seams and fibers.
  • Use a vacuum with adjustable height settings. You want the beater bar high enough to avoid excessive friction on brand-new fibers.
  • Expect light shedding for the first few weeks. This is perfectly normal and will lessen over time.

🧼 Spills or stains? Blot gently, don’t rub. Reach out to us for product-specific care advice, especially for high-performance or patterned carpets.

👣 Traffic & Settling Tips

Your carpet will take a few days to relax into place. Wrinkles, ripples, or slight puffing can occur during this time, especially if your home experiences large temperature or humidity shifts.

What to do:

  • Keep foot traffic light for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid sliding furniture or dragging boxes across the surface.
  • If any unevenness persists after a week, contact CTW. We’ll gladly assess and make it right.

🧼 Long-Term Carpet Care

To keep your carpet looking beautiful and performing at its best:

  • Vacuum at least once a week, more often in high-traffic areas.
  • Have your carpet professionally cleaned every 12–18 months.
  • Consider rotating furniture occasionally to prevent wearing paths.
  • Use doormats at entryways and encourage shoe removal when possible.
